Health and Safety policy
Enfield Removals Health and Safety Policy
Enfield Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors, and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with home and office moves, transport, packing, loading, and storage operations.
1. Policy Statement
The management of Enfield Removals recognises its responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry best practice. Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health, and to continually improve our health and safety performance across all removal services.
We will allocate appropriate resources, provide competent supervision, and ensure effective communication so that health and safety is an integral part of planning and delivering every move.
2. Scope of the Policy
This policy applies to all employees of Enfield Removals, including permanent, temporary, and agency workers. It also extends, where appropriate, to contractors and subcontractors working under our control, and to customers present at properties or premises while our removal teams are on site.
3. Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Enfield Removals is responsible for implementing and maintaining this policy. This includes:
Identifying and assessing significant risks associated with lifting, carrying, vehicle use, working at height, and handling customer belongings.
Putting in place safe systems of work and method statements for domestic and commercial removal tasks.
Providing and maintaining safe vehicles, tools, lifting aids, and protective equipment.
Ensuring employees receive suitable health and safety training, instruction, and supervision.
Investigating accidents, incidents, and near misses and taking action to prevent recurrence.
Reviewing this policy periodically and updating it as required.
4. Employee Responsibilities
All employees have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. Employees must:
Follow all safety rules, procedures, and instructions provided by Enfield Removals.
Use equipment, vehicles, and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.
Cooperate with risk assessments and comply with method statements for lifting, carrying, loading, and unloading.
Report accidents, injuries, near misses, hazards, and unsafe conditions without delay.
Refrain from any reckless or unauthorised behaviour that could put themselves or others at risk.
5. Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before starting removal work, Enfield Removals will carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments appropriate to the property, access routes, and the type of items being moved. These assessments will consider, among other factors:
Manual handling demands, including the size, weight, and shape of items.
Trips, slips, and falls risks within properties, staircases, corridors, and external walkways.
Vehicle access, parking, and loading arrangements.
Use of lifting equipment, ramps, trolleys, and protective coverings.
Weather conditions and lighting where outdoor loading or unloading is required.
Appropriate control measures will then be implemented, such as team lifting, use of handling aids, securing loads, cordoning off work areas, and scheduling work to reduce congestion in and around the property.
6. Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Moving household and office items is physically demanding and presents a significant risk of musculoskeletal injury. Enfield Removals is committed to minimising these risks by:
Providing manual handling training to all removal staff, focusing on safe lifting techniques, posture, and team coordination.
Using suitable handling equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, furniture sliders, ramps, and straps to reduce strain.
Planning routes through properties to avoid unnecessary carrying, awkward turns, and obstructions.
Ensuring that items are dismantled, wrapped, or broken down where reasonably practicable to make handling safer.
7. Vehicles, Driving, and Road Safety
Our vehicles are central to our removal services, and safe driving is essential. Enfield Removals will:
Maintain all vehicles in good working order and in line with legal requirements and manufacturer recommendations.
Ensure that drivers are competent, appropriately licensed, and familiar with the vehicles they operate.
Provide guidance on safe loading, weight limits, and securing loads to prevent movement during transit.
Plan journeys to allow adequate time, reduce stress, and encourage safe driving behaviour.
8. Customer Premises and Public Safety
Our operations often take place at residential and commercial premises, where members of the public may be present. To protect everyone affected by our work, we will:
Agree access arrangements and work areas with the customer in advance where possible.
Keep walkways and stairways as clear as practicable during the move, and highlight trip hazards.
Use warning signs or verbal instructions to alert people to moving loads or restricted areas.
Park vehicles considerately and safely to reduce risk to pedestrians and other road users.
9. Training, Information, and Supervision
Enfield Removals will provide appropriate health and safety training and information for all staff. This may include induction training, manual handling instruction, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, and emergency procedures. Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring work on site, correcting unsafe practices, and reinforcing safe behaviours.
10. Welfare, Health, and Wellbeing
We recognise that removal work can be physically and mentally demanding. Enfield Removals will seek to manage workload reasonably, ensure that rest breaks are taken, and encourage employees to report any health concerns or fitness issues that may affect their ability to work safely. We do not tolerate the use of alcohol or drugs that impair performance during working hours or on company business.
11. Incident Reporting and Policy Review
All accidents, incidents, and near misses must be reported promptly to management so that appropriate action can be taken. Records will be maintained and reviewed to identify recurring issues and opportunities for improvement.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, legislation, or best practice. Updated versions will be communicated to all employees and made available to customers on request.
By working together and following this policy, Enfield Removals aims to deliver safe, reliable, and professional removal services while protecting the health, safety, and welfare of everyone involved.
